Zippel Bay Northern Pike Tournament

Zipple Bay Nothern Pike Tournament

Zippel Bay Lodge may be booked, but Warroad has plenty of rooms for anglers who wish to fish the 20th annual Zippel Bay Pike Tournament.  Warroad is located 22 miles west of Zippel Bay Resort and the 2016 tournament. Click here for a list of lodging options in Warroad.

This year’s tournament is made up of two person teams and is a two day tournament.

There are 2 fishing flights each day:
Day 1: 8am – 4pm & 8:15am – 4:15pm
Day 2: 8am – 2pm & 8:15am – 2:15pm
Hear what Katie Pieper, 2 time winner, had to say about the tournament:

“I have been fishing the Zippel Bay Northern Pike Tournament for 8 years with my fishing partner Katie Berg who has been fishing the tournament for 17 years of the 20 year tournament. She started fishing with her dad in the beginning and as years past he decided to retire and I was able to step in. The tournament has always been the last weekend of April dependent on the weather. There have been a few cold years where the ice could still be seen on Zippel Bay where the tournament is held. Some years the tournament has been bumped back due to ice. It is extremely exciting yet competitive tournament for us. Our main goal every year is to beat our husbands Chris Pieper and Greg Berg, who are also a team. They have fished the tournament ever year since the beginning. Our excitement starts to build in early April as we get ready, checking our lines and lures. We prepare babysitting for the kids to make sure we have a fully uninterrupted weekend of Northern fishing.

Saturday morning as the sun rises we get our many, many layers on to stay warm for no matter what the weather brings! Everyone warms up their boats and watches the steam rise off the bay, secretly getting excited and anxious to see if they can catch that over 40″ Northern every one dreams about. The shot gun goes off at 8:00 a.m. for the first heat and the boats fly from the starting line, racing to get their spot. Katie and I have developed a system that works best for us, which includes music and lots of laughter. I’m pretty sure that’s how we draw the “big one’s” in! The limit is 6 Northerns per team and only two lines. It’s a race to get as much weight as you can before 4 p.m.on the first day. There is nothing more exciting than getting a hit and wondering, will it be a “big one”? As you start to reel and the fish starts to fight the adrenaline builds. When you pull up a 43″ Northern for the first time it is truly amazing as you see the head of this huge fish emerge from the water.
When everyone is back in for the evening Deanna, Nick and the staff at Zippel Bay greet you with warm how’d you do’s and cheering you on. Everyone waits for the leader board to show on the screen and see where we all fall into place. Even if you fall short on Saturday there is still a chance for Sunday! The great part about this tournament is it can change quickly with just one fish in your favor. It’s one tournament I will never miss as long as I’m able. The people are great, the fishing is amazing and the opportunity to win is in your reach.”

Warroad History

Warroad has a proud heritage and history and in no place is it more prevalent than in our passion for our community and sports.

Kah-Bay-Kay-Nong is the Ojibwa word for Warroad. Respected leader, elder, and hockey legend Henry Boucha’s great great great grandfather, Ay-Ash-A-Wash, is considered the first chief of Warroad and Buffalo Point (just over the border in Manitoba, Canada) and led the Ojibwa in battles against the Sioux on the “War-Trail” that traveled to the west from Lake of the Woods. Warroad got its name from the War-Trail, a place of honor for the Ojibwa/Anishinaabe.

“Na-May-Poke, son of Ay-Ash-A-Wash, sold part of his land allotment to the Warroad School. A wise elder, Na-May-Poke wanted the name Warroad Warriors instilled for the school in honor of our ancestors’ blood that was given to keep the land in Warroad and on Lake of the Woods. In the early 1990s, when the Civil Liberties Union wanted the Warroad Warriors to change its name, we stood our ground like our ancestors, and kept the in honored of our fallen Warriors. In that honor, the local Ojibwa/Anishinaabe Indian Community and the Indian Parent Committee (LIEC) designed the logo now used at Warroad High School, and along with the Indian Education Department, supported the name Warroad Warriors.”

in 2014, Boucha shared this story with the National Coalition Against Racism in Sports and Media, explaining the deep and honorable connection the “Warriors” have to our local history.  This history was then celebrated with the national organization with a pipe ceremony, honor, song, and a re-dedication of the Warroad logo that included the entire student body and many members of our community.

You may have heard the phrase “Hocketown USA™” and if you thought it meant Warroad, you were right.  The famous moniker has been use to reference our town since the 1950s and now we have permission to officially use it and claim it. Warroad now has eight Olympians to its credit and we are so proud of Gigi Marvin and T.J. Oshie for representing the United States so well in Sochi.

On your next visit, we invite you to take a walk through the Warroad Heritage Center or the Wm. S. Marvin Training and Visitor Center. When you’re at a hockey game, enjoy all the history that has been compiled and displayed right in the Gardens and Olympic arenas. Check out our newly painted water tower with the hockeysticks and take in any of the Warroad Warriors sporting events.

We are honored to share our heritage with you. If you have any questions or need help locating area community businesses or services, please call 800.328.4455 or email wcoc@wiktel.com.

Hit the Trails

There is a certain peace and tranquillity on the trails this time of year.  Grab your cross country ski’s or snowshoes and make Warroad your home base for a weekend of cross country skiing or snowshoeing on some of the best trails in the north.  Zipple Bay State Park located 10 miles northeast of Williams, maintains over 12 miles of groomed ski trails.  Hayes Lake State Park, 30 miles south of Warroad, maintains 9 miles of classic track and skate ski. Closer to town, visitors can enjoy the Warroad School Forest with shorter groomed trails.

Don’t have cross country ski’s.  No problem.  Doc’s Harbor Inn in Warroad rents snowshoes, cross country skis, and ice skates… Call them at 218-452-3302 for more details.

After a day exploring the great outdoors, stop by for a cup of coffee or warm up with a hot coco at one of the local coffee shops before heading out to dinner.
