Riverbend Skate Path

In a Facebook post on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2022 the Riverbend Skate Path Facebook page announced “The Riverbend Skate Path is officially closed for the season. Snow load causing slush has made it unable to be skated on. Thank you all for a great season and the #riverbendercrew can’t wait for next winter (though they may enjoy their much needed break!)”

Initially intended as a 3/4 mile path between neighbors, the Riverbend Skate Path grew to a total length of 2.5 miles in 2020. In 2022, the path was extended to 5.2 miles making it the longest ice skating path in the United States and they hosted the 1st annual FriluftFest. This new event was based on the Norwegian concept of “friluftsliv”, or open-air life drawing on the Scandinavian heritage of many in our area.

If you’re still looking to get outside and skate or even hit the trail, Doc’s Harbor Inn rents skis, skates, and snowshoes and their outdoor hockey & skating rink is open.

Until next year, check our this story on how the path got it start.

Friluftfest

The Riverbend Skate Path will host the first annual FriluftFest on Saturday, February 5, 2022 from 11am to 7pm. This event is based on the Nordic concept of Friluftsliv, which translates literally as “open air living” and means “to embrace the outdoors, in all weather.” Playing on several Scandinavian words, local businesses will host stations along the path that feature a specific theme:

  • Lake of the Woods Coffee Company | Fika [fee-ka], Swedish, “coffee and cake with friends”
Open 12 – 2 pm, Free will offering coffee and snacks
  • Lake of the Woods Brewing Company | Utepils [Oo-ta-pils], Norwegian, “To drink beer outside”
Open all day, $15 growler deals
  • Northern Toboggan | Moro i snøen [moro ee snawn], Norwegian, “Fun in the snow”
Available 1 – 5 pm, Try out Toboggans and snowshoes or take a ride behind a
snowmobile at Lake of the Woods Brewery
  • Doc’s Harbor Inn | Sisu [see-soo], Finnish, “perseverance, determination, strength, will”
Relay races, pond hockey tournament, figure skating performance
  • Landin’s Landing | Hygge [hoo-ga], Danish, “comfort and coziness”
Relax by the fire pit and get comfortable by the fire
  • Doug’s Supermarket | Smörgåsbord
Available 4 – 6pm at Lake of the Woods Brewing Company, enjoy a range of
    Scandinavian foods

FRED Robotics will be hosting a free will offering lunch of hot dogs and hot cocoa at Doc’s Harbor Inn concessions from 11:30am to 1:30pm with all proceeds going to the path. Concession huts will be up and available all day selling treats and Riverbend Skate Path gear.

The event will end with a candlelight skate in celebration of the path and the way it has brought the community together. Ice lanterns created by the Boy Scouts and votives donated by Lake of the Woods Wax & Soap Company will be set out for additional ambiance as skaters go by with their own battery-operated candles.

Ice Fishing Report | January 2022

Lake of the Woods Fishing Report Jan. 2022

Lake of the Woods Ice fishing report courtesy of Springsteel Resort.
“We have our ice road plowed out past Buffalo Point nearly to Whiskey flats. Basically, the whole length of the road is fishable but the best depths this early January has been 22-26 ft. With walleye sauger and perch being caught it seems like the standard Lake of the Woods hooks are working. Anything with gold on it and some glows like red or green. Fatheads and shiners are the most common bait that are being used. Currently, there is 16-18 inches of ice with 6-10 inches of snow cover.”

Looking to catch that trophy walleye or monster pike on Lake of the Woods? Check out our fishing page to learn more about ice fishing from Warroad or request lodging dates on our lodging availability page.

Arnesen’s Rocky Point Fishing Report

Here’s your latest fishing report from Captain Nick Dejno of Arnesen’s Rocky Point Resort on beautiful Lake of the Woods!

“The bite has been good the last few weeks. We’re fishing anywhere from 9-26 ft. and we’re starting to see the fish move closer to the shoreline. We are still drifting with spinners and crawlers. For colors of choice, I would recommend trying gold and red or pink and silver… Good luck out there!

South Shore Fishing Report July 23, 2021

Lake of the Woods Fishing Report Courtesy of The Woods Goods:

“On the south shore, the fish have transitioned to 12-17′ of water, focusing on the areas between Willow Creek and Rocky Point. Best choice is to pull spinners with a bottom bouncer and a night crawler.
Trolling with a crank bait such as a Rapala, deep-diving, will allow you to search for schools of fish on those slower days.

Fishing on any rock reef around Rocky Point, Long Point, 12 mile, etc. has been steady. Use jigs with minnows or leeches on rocks.

The mud bite has been in 30′ or more. Find fish with downriggers or leadcore. The key is to keep moving and use your electronics to stay on schools of fish.”
