Lake of the Woods Fishing Report | June 28

Lake of the Woods Fishing Report

The Woods Goods Report… “Fishing on the big lake continues to be great!  On the south end, good numbers and good sized fish are being reported in many places.  A jig and a minnow continue to produce but some are starting to use other methods as fish transition toward the main basin, mid summer patterns.  The most consistent reports have been from the Rocky Point and South Tip to Whiskey Flats areas.

At the Northwest Angle there is plenty of action to be had.  Walleye fishing has been great with good numbers of fish on points and reefs in the 22-26′ range.  Smallmouth fishing remains decent on some shorelines.  The recent Ontario Musky opener adds another element of fun for people fishing up north.  Bays and rocky shorelines are places to focus for these incredible fish right now. “

September 2020 Fishing Report

September Springsteel Resort

Springsteel Resort reports “Now that September is here the bait fishing has taken over again. The water on Lake of the Woods has gotten cold and the walleye have moved back into the bay. Fishermen are picking up walleye with spinner and or jigs in all the same spots you would fish in early June. It seems the bite has been more specific to mornings and evenings but should continue to get better later into the month.

The temps look steady the next couple weeks so the fishing should be good for the fall fishermen. Good luck fishing.”

August 2020 Fishing Report

August Fishing Report

Springsteel Resort reports “Fishing in August on Lake of the Woods has been very steady with nice limits of walleye primarily due to downrigging the mud flats in Muskeg Bay. As September approaches downrigging is still the method for most, we are seeing the fish moving closer to the shorelines. Fishermen are now starting to get fish with spinners at places like Whiskey Flats, Swift Ditch, and the sandbar off of Springsteel Resort. It should only get better are we move into September.

We hope everyone has a safe and successful summer of fishing and that continues into the fall. Good luck.”

Lake of the Woods Fishing Report | Warroad, MN

True North Guide Service reports “The weather is hot and so is the fishing! Lots of big fish being caught in the deep mud north of Long Point and around Lemms. Pulling crank baits has been best but crawlers and leeches are also producing. Lots of quality eater size fish being caught north of Garden Island as well. Closer to Warroad fishing at south tip 11-21′ has been steady pulling crawlers or minnows, around Whisky Flats pulling spinners or jigging has been very good in 24-27′. Along the south shore from Swift Ditch to Williow produced some really nice size fish in 11-14′ today. Good luck and tight lines!”

Lake of the Woods Fishing Report | June 21, 2020

With the weather warming up, True North Guide Service reports the fishing is heating up too.

“Fishing along the south shore was good all week from Springsteel to Willow. Pulling spinners with minnows or crawlers worked best. Target depths were 6-14′ with lots of good eaters being caught.  Jigging north of the blinker 18-21′ was steady with a few slots in the mix for pictures. The south tip of Buffalo turned on later in the week with some quality fish being caught on spinners and jigs. Fishing 12 Mile Reef was also good this week jigging in the mud off the rocks. Out in the mud between Sandy Shores and Zippel Bay 30-32′ jigging was good but slip bobbers and leeches were out producing the jig and caught most of the photo fish.”

Lake of the Woods Fishing Report | June 19, 2020

True North Guide Service reports “I’ve been fishing the west side this week, with strong south winds we stuck to the south shore pulling spinners between Swift Ditch and Willow Creek in 6-9′ with really good results.  9-14′ around the blinker was also productive and we were able to fill the livewell. Just north of the blinker in 18-21′ also produced some quality eaters and some nice slot fish. On whisky flats jigging with shiners out produced minnows and leeches tenfold. You had to sort through some smaller fish but the action was steady and some nice upper slots were caught as well.”

Springsteel Resort Ice Fishing Report

Feb. Ice Fishing Report Springsteel Resort

Springsteel Resort reports “The bite has been a little spotty this last week with a lot of fish being marked but not always biting. You also have to sort through some smaller fish. The best depths seem to be in that 23 to 26 feet. As for colors, that changes daily but if you have gold and a few different colors of glow you will be fine. Don’t be afraid to put down a plain hook from time to time either. It’s the time of year where electronics and persistence pays off.

Don’t forget pike tip-up fishing is just around the corner.

Thank you and good luck fishing.”

Lake of the Woods Ice Fishing Report | January 2020

Arnesen's Fishing Report

Arnesen’s Resort, Lake of the Woods Ice Fishing Report:

Rocky Point guide, Joe Fish, reports the bite on beautiful Lake of the Woods “has been good in the areas we are fishing. It does take a little work getting fish to commit to biting, but when you get them hooked up, we’re seeing eater sauger and some nice walleye. A majority of our houses are in 27-31 ft. on shoreline breaks and the edges of reefs. Red, pink and firetiger orange have been the colors of choice for several groups. Electronics are very helpful. The ice conditions are good in our area. Our houses are spread out for 10 miles and are constantly on the move to find fish. Best of luck!”

Flag Island Resort, Lake of the Woods, NW Angle Reports:

Ontario:
“We are finding that walleye and saugers are in depths between 22 and 32 feet at 33 degrees. Fish are moving more towards the edges of the reefs. Guides and guests have been using flyers, pink and gold jigs, or anything that flashes or makes noise catches the attention of the fish. Some additional comments from our guide: It works well to bounce the bait on the bottom and bring it up about 2 feet and repeat, some even saying doing it aggressively is working best.
Until next week, good luck fishing!”
Guide Mick Messelt
, Flag Island Resort

Minnesota:
“Walleye and saugers have been caught between 23 and 30 feet of water. Fish seem to be located on reefs just on the break line.  We have noticed that the fish are starting to produce eggs. We have noticed that a plain red hook with a lively minnow has been working, same as buckshots and flyers on the jigging rod. We recommend a glow red. Additional comments: Don’t be afraid to jig them up!
Until next week, good luck fishing!”
Guide Matt Hendry, Flag Island Resort

Borderview Lodge Reports:

“Mixed bags have been the common theme. The bite has been somewhat in spurts, those aggressively working the water column are having more success. We are having a mix of sizes, but are still having a large number of small ones, bring them up slow.

We progress North and are past the 10 miles from Pine Island mark. 32 feet area. Bring the normal Lake of the Woods tools in the tackle box, but make certain you have a good one for making noise and can aggressively jig the water column with it. Noise has been a good attractant to the dead stick bite.

Mild forecast for the week ahead. Looks like we should have the temps above zero all week. South wind for a few days. Strange for January.”

Lake of the Woods Ice Report | December 18, 2019

Springsteel Resort checked the ice again this afternoon out to the Sandbar and DNR reef and found 12-14″ of ice in the spots they checked last week.

“So things are coming along nicely. There is still rough ice the first mile or so that we plan to work on this weekend. We are going to continue to allow ATVs and snowmobiles with portables or smaller skid houses for the weekend. We are not allowing truck traffic for the weekend.

The fishing report has been steady with walleye and sauger being caught at the sandbar and DNR reef in 18-21 ft.

We will have more updates to follow when we decide to open the road. As always use caution when traveling on the ice this weekend. Good luck and be safe.”
