Fall Fishing Report | Lake of the Woods

With the weather getting colder, True North Guide Service reports the fishing is heating up!

The fall jig bite is on with the start of the shiner run. Jigging with shiners or chubs in the morning at whiskey flats 23-24′ produced non stop action, boating 50+ fish before 11am back to back days. Orange/gold or chartreuse/gold worked best catching limits of walleye and sauger, along with several good slot fish and two over 28″. In the afternoon/ evening fishing 21′ ft around the blinker by Warroad and along the south shore is also producing lots of nice eaters and a few good slot fish for photos. Fishing 21-29′ feet from Lighthouse Gap to Zipple Bay also yielded good numbers of fish. Jigging with shiners or chubs was best.

Zippel Bay, Morris Point, 12 Mile, & Whiskey Flats Fishing Report

Warroad Fishing Report

Lake of the Woods Fishing Report Courtesy of True North Guide Service.

“This week I spent some time around Zippel Bay, Morris Point, 12 Mile, and Whiskey Flats. At Zippel Bay we found fish right out front in 16 to 25 feet drifting with spinners and minnows. Hammered gold was best. At Morris Point we mostly jigged. We found fish anywhere from 23 to 35 feet around structure or in the mud. Orange/gold was out-producing the other colors. Pulling cranks around 12 Mile was on fire. Lots of nice fish being caught in the mud off the south and west side. Whiskey Flats is still holding lots of fish anywhere from 23 to 27 feet. Right tight to the Canada line was best, and the break was also good producing several limits of fish.”

Lake of the Woods Fishing Report | August 2019

This week, True North Guide Service focused their fishing report on the west end of the Lake of the Woods.

“Fishing has been consistent with good numbers of fish being caught on Whiskey Flats in 23 to 26 feet of water pulling spinners with minnows or crawlers. Fishing the south and west side of 12 Mile has also been producing good eaters and a few photo fish in 26 to 28 feet of water off the edges and in the mud. Fishing around Arnesen’s Reef was also producing fish out in the mud 28 to 32 feet with spinners and minnows or crank baits. Some of the best fishing we had this week was on the South Shore in 20 to 22 feet of water pulling spinners with minnows or crankbaits around Swift Ditch. Orange/yellow, hammered gold and fire tiger colors were best. Good luck and enjoy the upcoming long weekend!”

Lake of the Woods Fishing Report – Weekend of August 3

Aaron Phillipe of True North Guide Service reports: Fishing remains good on the west side of the lake. The best fishing was around the sandbar by Springsteel Island pulling spinners with minnows in 16 to 20 feet. Whiskey Flats produced some good eaters in 25 to 27 feet with a couple of good photo fish to cap off the day. Again, pulling spinners with minnows was best. Fishing in 13 to 18 feet near the south tip of Buffalo Point was best in the evening with spinners and crawlers. Fishing just north of the blinker in 19 to 20 feet was really productive with lots of good eaters, you just have to sort through some smaller fish. Spinners with minnows or crawlers produced about the same results. Best lure colors for all areas were yellow/green, chartreuse/gold and orange. Down rigging is starting to turn on but still seems like live bait is the preferred choice. Good luck and tight lines!

South shore/Willow Creek area is producing nice fish you just have to sort through the small ones, best bite was 11-17′ with spinners and crawlers. North Arneson’s reef is loaded with fish, Jigging or spinners off and around the reef are working great. Lemms Reef is also loaded with fish. Jigging right off the reef or spinners in the mud north of it is producing lots of photo fish and great eaters. The downrigger and lead core bite are starting to pick up. Arnesen’s Resort Lake of the Woods Fishing Report

Here’s your latest fishing report from Captain Tim “Wingnut” Hill of Arnesen’s Resort on beautiful Lake of the Woods.

“The bite has picked up with warmer weather. Fish are returning to reefs and points with many of them suspended off the bottom, so if you see a mark high up on your graph, you need to go for it. 27-32′ is the magic depth in most areas. We continue to work deep edges of the reefs and shoreline. Red and pink are the lucky colors. Switching to orange/chartreuse/blue helps to get the fish to bite. Try a plain painted hook with split shot on the dead stick. We are seeing a lot more slot fish over 19.5″ with some at the 30″+ size. All fish are very healthy. We are also seeing northern pike and perch picking up. Best of luck!”

Jason Williams landed the fish of a lifetime last week. The walleye measured in at 31.5″ and weighed 11 lbs.

February 11, 2019 | Springsteel Resort, Lake of the Woods Ice Fishing Report

Springsteel Resort reports “The road has kept us busy this year with the bridge upkeep and the weekly blowing snow but it’s still plowed to whiskey flats area. It still goes by the DNR reef and out through South Buffalo. There is a lot of snow now so most people are needing some kind of help with the plows.

Fishing has been decent at times. It’s been the best when we get a few days of consistent weather. We are still fishing deep in 26 to 28 feet but we have heard a few walleye getting caught shallower around 22-24 ft. It tends to be more mornings and evening but they have been nicer fish.

This week looks like it will be calm and steady so hopefully the fishing will pick up for the weekend. Good luck and be safe.”

The Warroad Chamber & Springsteel Resort Fishing Derby is this weekend at Springsteel Resort.  Over $30,000 in cash & prizes will be awarded.  Derby tickets are $20 each and available online or at local Warroad retailers.
